Phong Nha Cave: The First Wonder of Caves.

Phong Nha Cave: The First Wonder of Caves.

5.0

Phong Nha Cave is located in Phong Nha Commune, Quang Tri Province, approximately 50 km northwest of Dong Hoi Ward. With a total length of 7,729 meters and numerous large and small side passages, Phong Nha Cave is a remarkable river cave formed by an underground water system flowing through the heart of the mountain. It is renowned for its distinctive and spectacular stalactite formations. In 1994, at an international scientific conference on caves held in Hanoi, attended by leading Vietnamese and international scientists and speleologists, Phong Nha Cave was recognized as one of the most beautiful water caves in the world. This recognition was based on seven outstanding criteria: the longest water cave; the highest and widest cave entrance; the most beautiful underground lake; the largest and most beautiful dry cave; the most beautiful underground sandbanks and rock formations; the longest and most beautiful underground river; and the most magnificent and extraordinary system of stalactites and stalagmites. Phong Nha Cave is also famous for its unique rock formations, which have been named after their natural shapes, such as the “Lion,” “Unicorn,” “Elephant Kneeling in Worship,” “Royal Court,” and “Buddha Statue.” An underground river flows beneath the Truong Son Mountain Range before emerging at the entrance of the cave. Its water is crystal blue during the dry season and turns a distinctive reddish color during the rainy season.

Tien Son Cave – A Heavenly Paradise

Tien Son Cave – A Heavenly Paradise

5.0

Tien Son Cave is located halfway up the mountain, approximately 100 meters vertically above Phong Nha Cave. It is known as a “heavenly paradise” or “celestial palace” due to its magnificent natural beauty. Tien Son Cave is 980 meters long. About 400 meters from the entrance, there is a deep chasm approximately 10 meters deep, followed by an underground rocky passage stretching nearly 500 meters. Due to the challenging and potentially dangerous terrain, visitors are currently permitted to explore only up to approximately 400 meters from the cave entrance. According to scientists from the British Cave Research Association (BCRA), Tien Son Cave was formed tens of millions of years ago when a flowing stream gradually carved through and eroded the limestone mountains of Ke Bang. Later, geological movements caused the mountain mass to rise or sink, resulting in rock formations collapsing and blocking the original watercourse. This process created Tien Son Cave above, while the underground river continued to flow through the lower section, forming Phong Nha Cave.

Mooc Spring Tourist Site

Mooc Spring Tourist Site

5.0

Mooc Spring is located about a 20-minute drive from Phong Nha Cave. After exploring the spectacular caves of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang World Heritage Site, Mooc Spring is an ideal place for visitors to relax and unwind. According to the local language, “Mooc” means “to emerge” or “to spring up,” referring to the mysterious stream that suddenly gushes out from deep within the mountains. After winding its way through the mountains for hundreds of kilometers, the water emerges into the open air and remains refreshingly cool, with temperatures typically ranging from 16–18°C during the summer. According to cave exploration experts from the British Cave Research Association (BCRA), the phenomenon of water emerging from underground here is particularly unusual and remains unexplained. The depth of the lake is still a mystery, challenging further exploration and scientific research. At the source of the stream is a steep cliff, from which water continuously emerges from underground. Geological researchers believe that the stream may originate from underground water channels within the mountain cliffs. Mooc Spring offers a wide range of tourism activities, including swimming in the stream, the exciting “Splash Jump” experience, and kayaking at Mooc Rapids. Visitors can also capture beautiful photos at unique check-in spots around Chum Rapids. If you visit in March or April, you can admire the spectacular Yellow Mai Flower Garden, when the flowers bloom brightly along the crystal-clear stream, creating a picturesque natural landscape. At Mooc Spring, visitors can also relax and enjoy a special local food platter, featuring rustic dishes such as stream prawns, freshwater fish, and free-range chicken, along with a variety of unique local specialties that offer an authentic taste of the mountain region.
